Mentoring and Supporting Girls

Just as every girl is different; through our mentorship program; we are able to meet the different needs of girls in helping them discover their inner strength, choices, goals and dreams. We take them on a journey to discover who they really are and support them to reach their goal.

Zohra Wadi (15yrs) is a student at Mkwichi Secondary School. She is one of our girl’s leaders and recently appointed as F4GL adolescent advisory board member. Through the mentorship program, she had undergone through a one-month intensive training in life skills, leadership, Sexual Reproductive health, analyzing issues of gender based violence including child marriage and entrepreneurship. These skills have shaped her attitudes towards the challenges that girls continue to experience and how to stand up for her fellow girls. After the training with her fellow girls, they were placed on 6 months’ internship program with Foundation for Girls Leadership. With this experience, Zohra gained professional skills and is able to advocate both at local and national level for quality and inclusive education and accessibility of Sexual Reproductive health services by young people.

Her dream is to see every Malawian girl child educated and is able to stand up for her rights and grow to be independent. She now believes that she has a major role to play in promoting gender equality at school environment and everywhere.

Through her participation; she has learnt the need for government to invest in girl’s education. Zohra through this program she is now attached to another similar program as a youth mentor, through the Commonwealth mentorship program.

The program attempts to give girls skills, educate, give them a sense of self-worth, and provide them with young achievers who are role models to the adolescent girls who inspires and encourage them to stay in school and aspire for tertiary education. The mentorship and leadership program is being funded by the Freedom Fund- under the “Empower Her to Empower” project.
